Travel Experiences: Lombok, Indonesia

Right now, Bali is the “go-to” destination for influencers and housewives alike. So of course, when I had a chance to visit this insta-famous destination, I jumped on the opportunity! When I arrived in Bali I had already spent a month in Southeast Asia, so I wasn’t knocked back by the greenery and crystal blue waters. But I was extremely shocked by the crowds in the southern part of the island. Bali is advertised as a peaceful remote island, and while this is true for some areas of the island, the tourism industry has grown exponentially over the past decade. Realizing this, I ventured off to Bali after a couple of days. After visiting the Gili Islands I headed to Lombok, a larger neighboring island of Bali.

Lombok is an island east of Bali. With a population of approximately three million, the island is less populated than its famous neighbor which boasts four million residents. This provides visitors with a more relaxed and personal experience with the culture. In Lombok, I spent my days exploring empty roads via motorbike. Driving with rice paddies on my right and the beach on my left, alone on the road for miles was one of my most relaxing experiences abroad. There are tons of beaches to explore, most without western tourism influences. These beach villages offer coconuts and surf lessons if interested but also will let you lie in peace.

The chill environment is matched with its equally chill prices. Motorbike rentals are about $5-10 USD per day. My daily smoothie bowl habit was fulfilled for around $4 USD and there is even a beautiful café on the main street of Kuta. While I kept to the southern part of the island, there are many nature parks and volcanoes to explore if you tire of the beaches.

Overall, Lombok is an amazing island getaway. It is sure to be a highlight of your vacation!
